Join the Boston Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 6-9:30 PM for the inaugural Young Filmmakers Competition Screening and Reception. The BCA will present the semifinalists’ films at a large-scale screening and reception in the Cyclorama.
The evening begins at 6 PM with a prescreening open house, in which all entries will be screened on monitors throughout the Cyclorama. The semifinalist films will be shown on a big screen at 7 PM followed by the announcement of Competition winners and prizes. Afterwards, guests are invited to join the filmmakers for a dessert reception.
- 6:00 – 7:00: Prescreening open house: Guests are invited to mingle and watch ALL of the competition entries
- 7:00 – 8:15: Screening of the competition semifinalists on the big screen
- 8:15 – 8:45: Winning films announced and prizes presented
- 8:45 – 9:30: Reception with refreshments

About the Young Filmmakers Competition
The purpose of the Young Filmmakers Competition is to acknowledge and promote the fine artistic work being produced by young filmmakers throughout New England. This contest helps young artists build visibility and exposure within the film community and the general public. The Young Filmmakers Competition fosters an environment in which young artists benefit from the knowledge of experienced filmmakers and come together to share ideas with their peers.
Competition Features
Film Format and Subject:
This film and video competition is accepting short films (maximum length 12 minutes) on any subject. Projects can be in the any style including narrative, documentary, experimental, animation, etc. Projects do not have to be shot on film to be eligible for this contest. We encourage people to submit work shot on digital video.
Winning Film Selection:
Films will be judged by a jury comprised of local film industry professionals, film educators, artists and staff of the BCA. Films by the semifinalists will be shown at the competition screening and reception. A first, second, and third prize winner will be chosen from the semifinalists and announced at the screening. An additional prize will be awarded to the best project produced by a filmmaker 18 years of age or younger.
Prizes:
Winning filmmakers will receive prizes in conjunction with their awards. Prizes will either be monetary or film and video equipment of equivalent value to be determined by the Boston Center for the Arts. 1st prize: $500 or the equivalent in film and video equipment. 2nd prize: $250 or the equivalent in film and video equipment. 3rd prize: $100 or the equivalent in film and video equipment. Competition Screening and Reception:
The Boston Center for the Arts will select contest semifinalists and present their films at a large-scale screening event and reception in the beautiful and historic BCA Cyclorama on April 3, 2010. At this reception, contest winners will be announced and prizes awarded. Semifinalists will receive 4 free tickets to this event and any filmmaker who submits a project to the competition will automatically receive 2 tickets. The public may purchase tickets to this screening.
Competition Application Clinic:
As an assistance to potential participants, the BCA will be hosting a clinic on how to complete a high quality competition application. This workshop will also be an opportunity for applicants to ask competition administrators questions and to get to know the BCA. Competition Workshops:
On April 2, 2010, all young filmmakers who submitted their work to the competition will be invited to attend two workshops. Workshops will be run by festival jurors to provide participants with industry knowledge and further guidance in preparation for their next filmmaking projects. These workshops are also designed to provide a venue for young filmmakers to connect with their peers. Workshop topics and specific schedule to be announced.
BCA 2011 Film Series:
Starting in 2011, the BCA will be launching a year-round film series featuring work by prominent professional New England filmmakers. As part of this program, films by the Young Filmmakers Competition winners and semifinalists will be shown as introductory shorts before the main features. This will provide young filmmakers continued exposure in the New England film community after the completion of the contest.

Rules and Regulations:
Filmmakers between the ages of 16 and 22 who live or go to school in New England are eligible to apply to this competition.
While eligible films may be created in conjunction with academic or after school programs, the applicant must be the primary filmmaker and creative force behind the production.
Projects created on digital media or film are eligible for this contest.
Films may not exceed a maximum running time of 12 minutes.
- All applications must be received by midnight on February 1, 2010 and must be accompanied by a nonrefundable $10 application fee (per film submission). Individuals may submit more than one entry; however, each entry must be accompanied by separate submission forms, fees, and materials.
- By submitting a film to this competition, the applicant gives the Boston Center for the Arts unlimited rights to show said film in public screenings on BCA property or on the BCA website, as well as to promote said screening in press, marketing, and promotional materials.
- The Boston Center for the Arts is not able to return any DVDs submitted to this contest
- Submitted material must not contain obscene, unlawful or objectionable materials
- The Boston Center for the arts reserves the right to refuse any entry at its own discretion.

Applications should include: a completed written application, a $10 check made out to: Boston Center for the Arts, and a high-quality DVD of your film with the title and your contact info written on the disc. 2) Electronic Application: If your short film is already posted on the internet, you can apply by filling out the electronic application and including a link to your film’s website. You will be asked to fill out your application and submit your $10 application fee by clicking on the link below. Applications that are not accompanied by a $10 payment will not be considered. Please note: If your film is selected to advance beyond the first round of judging we will contact you and ask you to send us a high quality DVD hard copy.
