Internship Opportunities
The Boston Center for the Arts offers internships in a variety of departments including: Administration, Development & Marketing, and Programming. Internships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, recent grads and professionals. These internships are great for individuals who would like to gain insight in non-profit arts management. Internships vary in length, desired qualifications, application deadlines, and stipends. All selected interns will be required to attend an orientation session as well as monthly meetings in which interns in all departments will meet to share their experiences at the BCA.
Arts Administration Intern - Fall 2010
The BCA is looking for a student who would like to gain insight and experience in the non-profit arts world. The arts administration intern will serve as a greeter to BCA visitors and provide light administrative support to the Executive Office. The ideal candidate is a student who is studying Arts Administration, Marketing, Non-Profit Business Administration or a related field and would like to get involved in a hip and bustling arts organization. Visual Arts Programming (VAP) Intern
The Boston Center for the Arts accepts applications for internships in Visual Arts Programming throughout the year. VAP internships are focused in the BCA’s Mills Gallery, one of the foremost centers for contemporary art in Boston. Interns will be the public face of the BCA Mills Gallery, engaging in regular dialogue with visitors. In addition they will work directly with the Program Manager and Gallery Manger to provide support for exhibitions and public programs. The ideal candidate must display strong writing skills as well as a commitment to and comfort with public engagement. Successful interns will work independently and take on a shared responsibility for the success of the BCA’s Visual Arts Programs. This opportunity is available to 2-4 individuals. Duration: VAP interns are expected to commit to a minimum of four months. Hours: Part –Time (12-16 hour a week during gallery hours: Wed & Sun 12-5pm; Thurs, Fri & Sat 12-9pm). Demographics Intern - Fall 2010
The BCA is seeking a graduate student with demonstrated experience in data-collection and analysis to assist with the BCA-wide initiative to collect visitor information of patrons of the Mills Gallery, Plaza Theatres, Calderwood Pavilion and Cyclorama. The demographics intern will be responsible for researching best methods for data collection and analysis for an arts organization. The intern will then develop and implement a demographics collection plan. In addition, the intern will assist with administrative duties assigned by the Office Manager. The ideal candidate will be an arts administrative, museum studies, non-profit administration, public policy or marketing graduate student. The successful candidate will have strong research, organizational and written and verbal communication skills. He/she must also demonstrate the ability to work independently. Duration: September 1, 2010-January31, 2011 (with the possibility of extension) Hours: Part time (15-20 hours a week). Education Intern - Fall 2010
The BCA is seeking graduate students (or recent graduates) with demonstrated interest and/or experience in visual arts education. The Education Intern will develop, implement, maintain and evaluate visual arts programs at the BCA. The intern will work closely with the Program Manager in a variety of community and family programming. He/she will work with diverse audiences including children, adults and families. In addition, he/she will serve as the BCA representative in the Mills Gallery during selected shifts. Other program support may be assigned as necessary. The ideal candidate is a graduate student (or post-graduate student) studying Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Art Education or a related field. Strong verbal and communication skills are required. Experience in teaching, assisting in visual arts classes and developing lesson plans is highly desired. Duration: This internship will be from September 1, 2010-January 31, 2011 Hours: Part time (15-20 hrs/week). Approximately 10 hours will be spent working in the Mills Gallery with an additional 5-10 hours in the programming office or at off-site locations. Weekend and evening work may be required. Volunteer Opportunities
VOLUNTEER GALLERY ATTENDANT
The Boston Center for the Arts accepts applications year-round for volunteer Gallery Attendant positions in the Department of Arts and Community Programs. The positions focus on the Mills Gallery but can involve work with the following program areas: the Artist Studios, the Resident Theater Companies, and/or our Cultural Partners. The Volunteer Program offers a unique opportunity to gain experience and knowledge working in a non-profit arts organization and to gain insight into the Boston arts community.
Position Overview
Volunteers are the face of the BCA, and are an important link between our programs and our public. Gallery Attendant responsibilities include:
• Supervising and representing the Mills Gallery during a scheduled weekly shift • Providing visitors with information about the gallery, the Artist Studios, theatre performances, and events • Assisting in event/performance production in the gallery • Assisting with artwork installation • Communicating in attentive, dynamic and professional ways with visitors, initiating and encouraging dialogue with and among visitors, and serving as a general resource for our public
